Zonin White Wine Review

Francesco Zonin, a seventh generation member of the Zonin Italian winemaking family, traveled to Miami to host Una Notte Bianca. The intimate white wine dinner event was held at The Vagabond, a retro-inspired boutique hotel in Miami’s Upper East Side.

In keeping with the evening’s theme, guests arrived dressed in all white at The Vagabond’s pool area for a reception featuring Zonin’s Prosecco Dress Code CollectionWhite Edition. The sparkling White Edition is crisp, light, and refreshing, with nice bubbles. It served well as for an aperitif for summer sipping around the pool.

While Zonin 1821 Prosecco is 100% Glera, the Dress Code Collection features three blended proseccos. The White Edition is 9% Pinot Bianco, which adds floral and fruit notes with the strong aromatic notes of Glera (91%).

After the reception, guests headed inside the boutique hotel’s restaurant, where Francesco Zonin led a conversation about the Zonin white wine portfolio as each uniquely different varietal was poured during dinner.

The dinner’s salad course was served with 2014 Tenuta Ca ‘Bolani Aquilis Sauvignon DOC. Made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, the Tenuta Ca ‘Bolani had floral notes and subtlety hinted of grass and herbs.

The 2014 Rocca di Montemassi Astraio is 100% Viognier, and grown in mineral rich soil that gives the wine a tanginess that paired well with the Cobia ceviche appetizer.

Next poured, from Zonin’s Sicilian estate, was a 2014 Feudo Principi di Butera Insolia. From the volcanic island of Sicily, the Insolia grape is grown in chalky limestone soil mixed with clay. Therefore, the wine has a strong mineral aroma with hints apples and sweet citrus. The Feudo Principi di Butera was a good match for the grilled octopus dish.

The 2014 Masseria Altemura Fiano was served with roasted Branzino in a tomato broth. The Fiano grape is grown in the sunny Masseria Altemura countryside located in Puglia (Italy’s boot heel). The wine has an intense and fruity bouquet, and, on the palate, ripe apricots and stone minerals.

The best for last, a glass of Castello del Poggio Moscato DOCG was presented with  fresh Strawberry granita. The 100% Moscato bianco, from the northern region of Lombardy, produces a naturally sweet and perfumey wine that is perfect as, or with, dessert.
