Miami Spice: Brunch at Izzy’s Oyster Bar

Izzy's Miami Spice French Toast

If you think that Miami Spice is all about lunch and dinner, think again, as some of the top restaurants in Miami are spoiling us with some tasty brunch deals. I mean, what’s not to love about leisurely rolling out of bed on the weekend, meeting up with your crew for some sinfully delicious grub and sipping on brunch cocktails?! Yes, not a thing at all – so when we received an invite in to Izzy’s Fish & Oyster Bar, we were happy to oblige.

Izzy’s Fish & Oyster Bar is brought to you by Chef/Owner Jamie De Rosa. Outside, you’ll feel the bustle of the beach, while inside, you’ll find a more relaxed, yet hip, seaside setting (or at least what feels like one) that will quickly remind you of the New England lifestyle. While you might not be able to jet up to New England right now, a trip to Izzy’s will get you into the mood – even more so, when you slurp up oysters and eye the warm, fresh lobster roll that is coming to a table near you (It better be to your table, as you’ll certainly regret missing out on this one). Luckily, for us, both appear on their Miami Spice menu.

As we all know, Miami Spice menus consist of three courses – usually appetizer, entrée and dessert. But for Izzy’s, it’s a bit different, as they know their customers well. Patrons wanting to experience the Miami Spice menu can select either a drink, appetizer and entrée or an appetizer, entrée and dessert. For us, we decided to do both. That’s not really allowed, but that Whoopie pie looked too good to pass up, so we decided to order it a la carte for an extra charge.

When dining out for Miami Spice or on any other day, we recommend going with the house specialties. – and Izzy’s specialties are available on the Spice menu.  To kick things off, we did just that, and went with the flight of New England oysters. While the oysters came with a variety of accoutrements: horseradish, Champagne Mignonette, Yuzu-Kosho Ponzu and lemon, we’re purists when it comes to oysters, and added just a touch of acidity with the lemon so we could taste the sweet, salty, brininess of each oyster. While the flight of oysters option comes with a supplemental fee of $12 for six oysters – and we think it’s well worth it, as their oysters come from small producers and are usually priced at $3.50 apiece. For those not wanting to pay for a supplemental charge, a duo of oysters are included in the regular menu,

For your entrée, you’ll have a few tempting options to choose from, but we recommend ordering the lobster roll. Available either hot or cold (we went with the hot version), Izzy’s signature dish will awaken your senses and whisk them away to New England. Lightly toasted bread topped with warm, succulent lobster and house dill pickles – yes, the perfect trifecta. I can still taste the buttery goodness. It’s definitely something that you’ll be dreaming about.

For dessert, we went with a New England Classic – the whoopie pie. (Did you know that there’s actually a Whoopie Pie Festival?) This special treat took us back to our childhood as we savored the layers of deliciousness – marshmallow fluff stuffed between two rich, chocolate cake layers. The other option is Del’s Frozen Italian Ice, a Rhode Island classic, and it’s perfect for those seeking something lighter.

The Miami Spice brunch menu is available Monday through Sunday from noon until 3 p.m.
